Once the summer swimming season is over and the pool has been thoroughly enjoyed, it is time to decide what maintenance to adopt to preserve water quality. The right decision will make preparation for the following season much easier. It also reduces breakdowns and brings considerable cost savings.
At Jara Mantenimiento de Piscinas, our experience and knowledge of the sector lead us to recommend winter pool maintenance. We explain the reasons and processes below.
Winter pool maintenance or emptying the pool?
As pool maintenance technicians, we do not recommend emptying the pool after the summer swimming season. There are several reasons why we recommend winterisation treatment once the season ends:
- Extra costs: emptying the pool wastes a large amount of water. Consider the additional expense of refilling it and starting a proper water treatment process from scratch, which will involve a high cost. Consider the financial savings.
- Do not empty the pool without assessing the installation. Whether to retain the water and which structural precautions are needed should be considered in light of the pool basin and ground conditions.
- Environmental reasons. Discarded water contains chemicals that can harm the environment. You must also consider the amount of water needed to refill the pool and make better use of resources by recovering water.
The winter pool maintenance process
In the past, the winter maintenance process was not well known and practices were limited to emptying the pool, with the financial and environmental drawbacks this involved. For some years, winter pool maintenance has offered a more economical, environmentally respectful alternative. We will achieve good-looking water throughout the year, preserved until the next swimming season.
- With our annual maintenance, we maintain the cleanliness of the pool basin. We preserve clean walls and flooring.
- Water parameter checks, cleaning and correct product use are part of maintenance. Removing algae and dirt should be accompanied by water quality assessment; appearance alone does not guarantee suitability for swimming.
- We also like to care for the surroundings and areas next to our customers’ pools, offering a garden maintenance service. Removing leaves and dirt is essential to getting rid of contamination that can accumulate on the water’s surface.
- A suitable cover may reduce incoming dirt and evaporation. Not every cover is a safety device: selection, installation and maintenance must suit the pool and intended use.
Maintenance methods can vary slightly depending on the area and its temperature. Additional measures are applied if the pool is located somewhere very cold and subject to frost.
