Green pool water: possible causes and when to request an inspection

Residential swimming pool with cloudy green water

Green water is a reason to request a pool inspection. Before buying another product, identify what has changed and explain the problem to the professional inspecting it. A photograph can help describe the issue, but cannot determine the treatment on its own.

Why pool water may turn green

Algae and filtration problems can be behind a colour change. The cause needs assessing at the installation: repeatedly applying the same treatment without checking the system can leave the underlying issue unresolved.

Jara provides cleaning and detailed filtration system and water quality inspections. This is the starting point for planning work suited to the pool, without promising a recovery time before its condition is known.

Information to prepare for an inspection

  • Note when the change began and whether it appeared gradually or suddenly.
  • Record products used, recent maintenance work and any available test results.
  • Describe any reduction in circulation, noises or changes in filtration system operation.

If the issue coincides with weaker water return, read the guide to reduced pool filtration flow. These observations help guide the inspection; they are not a remote diagnosis.

One-off cleaning or ongoing maintenance

A pool needing attention may require one-off cleaning. A pool with recurring issues may benefit from a review of its maintenance arrangements. Jara offers annual and seasonal services as well as occasional cleaning. The scope and work are agreed for each case.

To plan subsequent care, also read about regular pool maintenance. Do not add products blindly or use water colour as the only basis for deciding a pool is ready for swimming.
